We continue our series on the best music enjoyed by the Emo community. This is part 14. The last several songs in this series are considered Post-Emo Indie Music–yet highly enjoyed by the new generation of Emos.
The Promise Ring released “30 Degrees Everywhere” as LP and CD through Jade Tree Records. This is low-fi and slightly out-of-tune in a cute kind of way. It features warped pop anthems, and yet they’re sweet in an Emo kind of way. Buy this early record, but you might want to avoid later ones, as they tended to be more “in tune” (and therefore, not nearly as unique).
Sunny Day Real Estate released “Diary” as an LP and CD through Sub-Pop. Many Emos consider this to be the ultimate expression of their culture. It’s somewhat like Smashing Pumpkins, with a sleek, expensive production and compressed sound. Listen closer and you’ll detect a blend of hardcore guitars and Emo-inflected vocals, not to mention amazingly busy drumming.
